The Weatherspoon Art Museum on the UNC-Greensboro campus houses over 6,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art. For 80 years, the museum has promoted the appreciation of art not only to the university students but as well as the locals of Greensboro and its visitors. It is the vastest modern and contemporary museum in the southern part of the country and a must-see attraction when in the city of Greensboro, North Carolina.

The public university art museum was founded by Gregory Ivy in 1941. It is dedicated to enhancing the quality of lives of the people through the enjoyment of the different forms of art from two different eras. Art promotes intellectual stimulation and opens doors to new perspectives. The museum does not only preserve and present modern and contemporary art but also interprets them by providing lessons in their educational tours. It features a 17,000 square feet area of indoor galleries and courtyard that’s open for public viewing. Admission is free and there are parking spaces and lockers allowed for all visitors.

Since 1941, the museum has amassed a large number of artworks that focus on American arts. In 1950, the museum inherited 242 artworks from the Cone sisters. They were known to have collected billion US dollars’ worth of works of art. Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Felix Valloton, and John Graham are just among the few artists whose artworks were added from the Cone sisters’ collection. One of the most famous pieces in the museum is the Japanese prints donated by Dr. Lenoir C. Wright. He was a professor of UNC-Greensboro who developed a passion for the Ukiyo-e genre of Japanese art. The style of painting was famous in Japan from the 17th up to the 19th centuries. Your visit to the Weatherspoon Art Museum will only be complete once you’ve stepped out to their outdoor garden which features a sculpture park. The garden showcases the sculptures of Elie Nadelman, Antony Gormley, Dan Graham, and Deborah Butterfield. The display is presented in beautifully landscaped surroundings.

Aside from the permanent art displays, visitors of the museum can also enjoy a number of exhibits which include the Falk Visiting Artist program. Once every fall and spring, they invite renowned artists to present an educational talk to the public audience that normally runs for several days. The museum also changes and updates its exhibits every month. This means that tourists will always have something new to see and expect whenever they plan to visit the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
